CFS41: Smallholders' access to inputs in Africa

17 Oct 2014

The 41st session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS41) is being held from 13 - 18 October at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). On behalf of the world's farmers during CFS41, the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) will partipate actively, and is co-organising four Side Events. The CFS41 Side Event titledSmallholders' access to inputs in Africa is being co-organised by One Acre Fund and the International Fertilizer Industry with the International Agri Food Network (IAFN). It will be held on Friday, 17 October at 8:00 a.m. in the Iran Room (B-116) at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The Side Event will shift the focus of the CFS41 debate away from the well-known challenges, and will make a call for action with key policy recommendations directed to African leaders. It builds upon the campaign "Smallholders Access to Fertilizers in Africa”, which was advocated for by eight organisations involved in African agricultural development.

This CFS41 Side Event is not only based on this new campaign, but is also planned in conjunction with the 2014 International Year of Family Farming and the African Union 2014 Year of Agriculture and Food Security, marking the 10th anniversary of Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) following the Maputo Declaration that was adopted in 2003 as the Africa-owned framework for addressing the region's agricultural development and food challenges. The 10th Anniversary of CAADP is an important milestone, and an opportunity to continue to prioritise agriculture and food security in policy and implementation to generate concrete results and impacts.

The event Chair is H.E. Mohammed Sheriff, Ambassador of Liberia and Chair of The Africa Group.
