On February 4th, 2019 the WFO Secretary General, Arianna Giuliodori, joined the 2019 IFA Joint Agricultural and Communication Meeting, to raise awareness on “The Climakers. Farmers Driven Climate Change Agenda”, the initiative according to which all the actors in the food value chain work together with the farmers, to advance the global political dialogue on agriculture and climate change, promoting farmers’ contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement.
Guest speakers from several organizations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and CropLife International, provided insights about their agendas and action plans and shared with the audience how they intend to address some of the most critical topics, such as health and environmental stewardship, climate change and innovation.
For her part, the WFO Secretary General took the floor to present the first ever climate action led by farmers, “The Climakers. Farmers Driven Climate Change Agenda”.
“As farmers we are concerned about climate change because it has a huge impact on what we do every day”, said Arianna Giuliodori, during her speech, reminding the audience that climate change is a crucial issue for farmers, “and if we want the Paris Agreement to be a success, we need to make sure that farmers can make their living from what they do”.
As representative of the founding member of the initiative, the WFO Secretary General reiterated the farmers’ willingness to work together with all the relevant stakeholders in the agricultural sector, research institutions, private sector associations, civil society and multilateral organizations, in a global alliance to provide solutions to climate change.
