In the context of the Conference of African Union and European Union Agriculture Ministers, held at FAO Headquarter in Rome, on July 2nd took place the celebrations for the International Cooperatives Day 2017. The theme of this year was “Co-operatives ensure no-one is left behind” and Copa & Cogeca and Agricord organised a seminar on how to step up cooperation between European and African farmers’ organisation to fight poverty and empower farmers in Africa.
The event was focused on four key issues related to the ability of farmers’ organisation to engage private sector in Agriculture; the integration of young farmers in Agriculture; a sustainable land management for young farmers; and the opportunities offered by Climate-smart Agriculture. Investments, digitalisation, value chain and access to land for young farmers were discussed.
WFO President Theo de Jager attended the event and gave his view on the role of private sector in agriculture.
