Francesca Gironi, representative of WFO Women's Committee, today took the floor during the third day of the plenary of the CFS 44. She focused on gender equality and on the role that women may have in agriculture and natural resource management.
"WFO presents its compliments to the CFS Chair, Secretariat and the Member States for the excellent work dispensed so far in the different items treated and in particular for organizing this forum on such an important topic.
Special attention in WFO is given to the importance of women and youth in agriculture. I am Francesca Gironi, representative of WFO’s women’s committee.
Farmers welcome the outcome document on the Forum on Women’s Empowerment in the Context of Food Security and nutrition
We recognize gender equality and women’s empowerment as central to the work of the CFS and to the achievement of global food security. We believe that gender equality and the important social and economic role that women may have in agriculture and natural resource management should be mainstreamed in each of the CFS workstreams.
This focus on women’s rights and empowerment also aligns the work of the Committee to the framework of the 2030 Agenda, especially with reference to the SDG 5 on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
Governments need to respect their commitments by translating them into national policies, programmes and investments in support of women with the collaboration of all stakeholders.
Furthermore, Governments need to monitor the progress toward this goal.
Farmers reiterate their contribution to the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment as fundamental prerequisites for the achievement of food security and nutrition. Women farmers in WFO really appreciate that their relevance is highlighted in the work of CFS".
