A delegation of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), led by the President, Dr Theo De Jager, will join the 24th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 24), that will be held in Katowice, Poland, from December 2nd to 14th, 2018.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to support the global response to the threat of climate change has been holding its session annually since the first meeting in Bonn, Germany in 1995.
This year conference is expected to finalize the guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and advance SDG 13 (climate action).
As every year, WFO will be actively engaged with interventions and side events to make farmers’ voice be heard louder and clearer in the debate.
More than anything, the COP 24 will be the occasion to officially launch the Farmers Driven Climate Change Agenda, approved by the 2018 WFO General Assembly and supported by the partners of the Climate Change Alliance.
Farmers are called to play a critical role to provide a sustainable future for the whole humankind and they want to have their says in the decision-making process on climate change and agriculture, by proposing solutions that are farmers-driven, science-based and result oriented.
This is the Farmers Driven Climate Change Agenda, a renewed framework that applying an authentic bottom-up approach, reverses completely the chart of the global political processes on climate change and agriculture and makes farmers gaining a leading role.
The Farmers Driven Climate Change Agenda is very challenging and the secret to its success relies on the active participation of all relevant stakeholders of the agricultural sector working together with farmers within a Farmers Driven Climate Change Alliance.
