The Farmers’ Constituency in the UNFCCC

The Farmers’ Constituency, a broad and diverse network of over 70 global, regional, and national farmers’ organisations and agricultural NGOs, represents the united voice of farmers within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, ensuring their representation and engagement in global climate negotiations.

Its members reflect the full diversity of farmers, producing food, fibre, fuel, and other ecosystem services for the global population while significantly contributing to the worldwide climate effort. It welcomes crop and livestock farmers, horticultural growers, pastoralists, ranchers, foresters, and aquaculturists; women, youth, and Indigenous farmers; farmer organisations and co-operatives; family farmers and businesses; farm workers, landowners, and tenants; as well as agricultural and other NGOs supporting farmers on the ground.

As an official observer platform, the Constituency works to ensure that farmers’ voices are heard in the UNFCCC process and that their knowledge and priorities are integrated into relevant decisions, enabling the sector’s potential for adaptation and mitigation while minimising and addressing loss and damage in agriculture.

The Constituency was established in early 2009. Following the creation of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) in 2011, WFO gradually assumed the coordination role, leading regular meetings, joint advocacy efforts, and official contributions on behalf of farmers’ organisations worldwide.
