Last October 16, the President of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), Theo de Jager, joined the official flagship event celebrating the 2021 World Food Day at the EXPO 2020 Dubai.
The theme of this year’s World Food Day, “Our actions are our future,” called on everyone to contribute to the transformation of agri-food systems for Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and a Better Life, leaving no one behind.
The event, organised by FAO and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates, convened a broad set of representatives from governments, international organisations, civil society, private sector, relevant non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders for an open conversation looking to connect the priorities stemming from the recently ended UN 2021 Food Systems Summit and the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference COP 26 and Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit.
Farming communities are at the forefront to grow good food for all. “For the majority of people today, food comes from shelves and shops; the biggest challenge is to introduce to them the whole world behind the shelves“, stated the WFO President de Jager, referring to how important it is that consumers understand that farmers produce food from sunshine, seeds, soil and water and they do it in such a way as they do not harm the planet, the nature.
During his speech, he didn’t miss the opportunity to stress the need to make it easier for young people to get involved in agriculture and choose a way of life closer to nature, eking a living from the soil.
