WFO joins the WTO Trade and Environment Week 2026

WTO Trade and Environment Week 2026

The seventh edition of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade and Environment Week, taking place in Geneva from 1 to 5 June 2026, brings together WTO Members and stakeholders to exchange views on the intersection of trade policy and environmental sustainability. Running alongside the regular work of the WTO Committee on Trade and Environment, the event provides a dedicated space for dialogue on issues that matter to farmers, food systems, and the planet.

World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) Secretary General Dr Andrea Porro will speak at the session “Emerging Agricultural Trade (EAT) Issues: An Environmental Sustainability Perspective“ on 2 June 2026.

The session is co-organised by the co-sponsors of the Statement on a Dialogue on Emerging Agricultural Trade Issues (WT/MIN (26)/40), circulated at MC14 by Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Iceland, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Peru, Switzerland, Ukraine and Uruguay. It marks the first in a planned series of workshops dedicated to this dialogue.

As a kick-off event, the session will focus on framing the concept of “emerging agricultural trade issues” and the diversity of perspectives that must inform it — including food security and nutrition, farmers’ livelihoods, and environmental sustainability. Discussion will cover the importance of avoiding one-size-fits-all approaches, recognising the full range of production systems and development conditions across WTO membership, and examining how outcome-based and production-method approaches interact in agricultural trade policy.

Dr Porro’s participation reflects WFO’s engagement in international trade policy discussions that directly affect farming communities worldwide.
