The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) marks a crucial milestone in the journey to achieve the 2030 Agenda and put the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track.
Convened under the theme, “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards Peace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability for All,” UNGA 78 will provide several occasions for world leaders, convened at UN Headquarters in New York, to explore solutions to the intertwined global challenges to advance peace, security, and sustainable development.
2023 SDG Summit
18 – 19 September
Convened by the President of the UN General Assembly, the 2023 SDG Summit will mark the halfway point to the deadline for achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Heads of State and Government will meet to assess the progress made towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda while providing high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading up to the target year of 2030 for achieving the Goals. The outcome will be a negotiated political declaration.
To maximize the SDG Summit’s impact, the UN Secretary-General is convening an SDG Action Weekend for UN entities, Member States, and relevant stakeholders to engage, participate and contribute to driving SDG transformation between now and 2030. The SDG Action Weekend will help ramp up momentum towards a successful SDG Summit and its follow-up.
Climate Ambition Summit
20 September
Alongside the SDG Summit, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres will convene the Climate Ambition Summit to accelerate action by governments, businesses, finance, local authorities and civil society to move the needle forward and respond to the urgency of the climate crisis.
The Climate Ambition Summit represents a critical political milestone for demonstrating that there is a collective global will to accelerate the pace and scale of a just transition to a more equitable, renewable-energy-based, climate-resilient global economy.
A delegation of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), led by President Arnold Puech d’Alissac, will be attending UNGA78 High-level Week to contribute to the debate and raise awareness of the experiences, needs, expectations, and constraints of farmers regarding the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
