Livestock and Dairy Practices for Climate Sustainability

Farmer-Led Livestock Practices for Resilient and Sustainable Food Systems

New publication highlights farmer-led climate-smart livestock and dairy practices from farmers worldwide

The World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), with the support of Nestlé, has launched “Livestock and Dairy Practices for Climate Sustainability”, a new publication showcasing farmer-led climate-smart livestock and dairy practices collected under the WFO-led Climakers Initiative.

Farmers around the world are experiencing the increasingly frequent and severe consequences of extreme weather conditions—from droughts and flooding to rising pest and disease outbreaks—which directly affect various agricultural sectors, including livestock.

The livestock and dairy sector is particularly exposed to these impacts, threatening both farmers’ productivity and the long-term resilience of food systems. At the same time, the sector remains central to climate discussions as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, while also offering multiple opportunities to support adaptation and mitigation efforts.

In this context, the publication brings together a wide range of climate-smart practices from farmers across Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and the Americas. These on-the-ground solutions demonstrate how farmers are implementing locally adapted strategies to reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, and ensure food security. From biogas energy to agroforestry, these experiences illustrate diverse and innovative approaches to addressing climate challenges.

“Farmers are not only on the frontlines of climate change. They are also key actors in delivering solutions”, said Arnold Puech d’Alissac, President of the World Farmers’ Organisation. “This publication highlights their engagement and commitment to building more sustainable and resilient food systems”.

By placing farmers’ experiences at its core, the publication reinforces their role not just as those affected by climate change, but as essential agents of change in advancing global climate action.

Designed as a practical resource, it supports farmers’ organisations, agribusinesses and decision-makers in facilitating knowledge exchange and scaling up effective climate solutions across regions. By learning from one another, farmers worldwide can strengthen their capacity to navigate an increasingly uncertain future while contributing to more sustainable and equitable food systems.
