UN Report Highlights the Role of the World Farmers’ Organisation in Advancing the UN Decade of Family Farming
The United Nations has released the Third Report on the Implementation of the UN Decade of Family Farming 2019–2028 (UNDFF) for the 2023–2024 biennium, officially presented to the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly on 15 October 2025. The report provides a mid-term assessment of progress since 2019, outlining significant developments in national action plans, policy frameworks and multi-actor coordination mechanisms that support family farming worldwide.
Within this context, the report recognises the role of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) within the International Steering Committee of the Decade, of which it has served as Vice Chair since May 2024, and the Organisation’s continued work to strengthen the representation of family farmers — particularly young and women farmers — in global policy discussions.
The report highlights WFO’s work to enhance farmers’ engagement in international processes. This includes the contribution of WFO Young, a mechanism dedicated to ensuring more structured representation and advocacy of young farmers at the global level, and the WFO Gymnasium, which enabled young farmers to participate in key global discussions, including at COP28. It also notes the development of the Position on Rural Women in Family Farming, adopted by the WFO Member Organisations ahead of the 2026 International Year of Women Farmers, as well as WFO’s participation in the UN Commission on the Status of Women, contributing to global discussions on gender equality in rural areas.
On the environmental agenda, the report acknowledges WFO’s role as Focal Point of the Farmers’ Constituency under the UNFCCC, strengthening the impact of family farmers’ organisations and coordinating their contributions to the multilateral climate debate. This includes work on the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance and participation in COP28, COP29, CBD COP16 and UNCCD COP16. The report also recalls the Global Conference of Family Farmers for Climate Action, hosted in October 2023 at WFO Headquarters in Rome, which contributed to developing joint positions on climate finance.
Finally, the UNDFF review recognises WFO’s policy work on digitalisation and artificial intelligence, food loss and waste, and nutrition, developed through a participatory, bottom-up process and adopted by the WFO General Assembly.
Ensuring that the voices of family farmers — including women and youth — continue to inform the policies shaping fair, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems remains essential. In this spirit, WFO will continue to work closely with the other members of the International Steering Committee, particularly fellow global farmers’ networks World Rural Forum and La Via Campesina, to advance ongoing UNDFF initiatives and to foster an enabling political environment that strengthens the resilience and prosperity of family farming communities worldwide.
