WFO Joins the Horizon Europe-Funded GreenFit Project to Accelerate Climate-Smart Farming Across Europe
The GreenFit Project officially kicked off with its first consortium meeting at KEDEA, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Funded under the Horizon Europe programme, this three-year initiative (October 2025 – September 2028) aims to accelerate the adoption of climate-smart farming practices across Europe by addressing the barriers that limit farmers’ ability to transition toward sustainable agriculture.
The World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), represented by Natalia Lupi, Project Specialist, took part in the meeting, joining a diverse consortium of 20 partners from 10 countries—Belgium, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Spain—committed to fostering innovation through a multi-actor and community-led approach. Among the partners are CIA-Agricoltori Italiani, a WFO member organisation, and the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy’s leading science and technology university.
GreenFit will conduct an in-depth bottom-up analysis of the socio-technological, economic, infrastructural, and behavioural barriers that farmers face, including limited connectivity, lack of digital skills, financial constraints, and resistance to change. Through participatory workshops and regional mapping, the project will deliver tailored strategies to foster the uptake of climate-smart technologies and support behavioural change.
The project will develop a suite of advanced tools, such as an AI-powered AgriChatbot, autonomous drones, a Farm Management Information System (FMIS) for data-driven fertilisation, irrigation, and plant protection, and Extended-Reality (XR) training modules to support informed decision-making, resource efficiency, and resilience. Embedded in a broader ecosystem, the project features the GreenFit Digital Agriculture Observatory – a central hub to monitor the update of climate smart solutions across countries – and will map key agri-food stakeholders to enhance collaboration and scale adoption and impact across Europe.
Through its participation, WFO will ensure that farmers’ voices remain central to the project’s design and implementation, contributing not only to technological development but also to research activities, the development of inclusive value chain partnerships, and the creation of the Digital Agriculture Observatory. WFO will actively engage its members in training and capacity-building efforts and will support the global dissemination of solutions and experiences emerging from GreenFit.
