Farmers’ Land, Farmers’ Future: WFO Adopts Policy on Land Use and Land Tenure

The WFO General Assembly in Nairobi adopted the WFO Policy on Land Use and Land Tenure, calling for secure tenure, equal rights for women, and protection against land grabbing.

Only 35% of land rights are formally recognised and documented worldwide, leaving 1.1 billion people — 23% of the global adult population — with insecure tenure.

At its 2026 Internal Affairs Session, the General Assembly of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) adopted the Policy on Land Use and Land Tenure, developed by the ad-hoc Task Force on Land Use and Land Tenure in collaboration with the International Secretariat.

Grounded in evidence from the Global Land Observatory and the State of the World’s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture (SOLAW) 2025 Report, the policy spans six areas — from land tenure security and responsible investment to women’s land rights and climate sustainability. Among its central commitments: the recognition of farmers’ right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent in land-related decisions, and the affirmation that secure land tenure and well-functioning land markets are essential to facilitating intergenerational farm transfer and enabling the next generation of farmers.

The adoption of this policy equips the WFO with a concrete advocacy framework on land governance that reflects the real conditions of farmers on the ground and positions the Organisation to advance their rights at international forums and in national policy dialogues.

Looking ahead, the WFO will use this policy to inform and shape discussions on land governance at the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and in national policy processes, ensuring that land tenure, food security, and agricultural sustainability are addressed together, with farmers at the table.
