What Is the WFO Annual Meeting and Why the 2026 Edition in Nairobi Matters
Learn what the WFO Annual Meeting is and why Nairobi 2026 is a key moment for farmers’ organisations and global agriculture.
The 2026 Annual Meeting of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) will take place from 8 to 11 June 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, and will be organised in partnership with the Kenya National Farmers’ Federation (KENAFF).
As a global farmer-led platform that brings together farmers’ organisations and agricultural cooperatives from every region of the world, the WFO Annual Meeting provides a structured forum where farmers’ organisations lead the conversation, interacting directly with policymakers, financial institutions, and private-sector actors. Over time, the WFO Annual Meeting has become a recognised space for dialogue, alignment, and collaboration at an international level. As agriculture evolves within interconnected economic and policy environments, strengthening collective capacity has become essential.
Hosting the 2026 WFO Annual Meeting in Nairobi reflects Africa’s increasing influence in global agriculture — both as a production base and as a growing market. Nairobi plays a strategic role as a regional business and policy hub, linking African agricultural priorities with international policy dialogue, financial flows and private-sector engagement.
Future Fields: Investing in Farmers’ Organisations
This gathering comes at a time when global agriculture is undergoing a deep transformation. Climate shocks, market disruptions, and shifting geopolitical dynamics are reshaping agricultural systems, markets, and the policy environments in which farmers operate. In this evolving landscape, agriculture remains a space of opportunity — for growth, innovation and long-term food security — when the right conditions are in place.
Farmers are entrepreneurs and long-term stewards of natural resources. They manage risk daily, adapt to evolving environments, and invest in their communities. Yet sustainable transformation requires more than individual resilience. Strong farmers’ organisations provide the structure that enables agriculture to function effectively within global markets and policy frameworks. They strengthen representation, facilitate investment, improve market access and ensure that farm-level realities inform decision-making.
Under the theme “Future Fields: Investing in Farmers’ Organisations and Empowering Communities for Sustainable Agriculture”, this year’s WFO Annual Meeting will focus on will translate ambition into action. The discussions will focus on strengthening farmers’ organisations, identifying best practices to enhance investment in agriculture, fostering innovation, and advancing digital infrastructure as key enablers of resilient and future-oriented agriculture.
Cross-cutting priorities will include ensuring social security for farming communities, promoting fair and sustainable land tenure and land use, and ensuring food security as a central consideration. A core focus will also be the empowerment of youth and women as essential actors in global food systems.
The outcomes of these discussions will serve as the farmers’ contribution to the post-2030 Agenda of the United Nations, ensuring that the voice of the world’s producers is central to the next generation of global development goals.
More than 500 participants from across the world are expected to gather in Nairobi for the 2026 WFO Annual Meeting to advance practical pathways that translate dialogue into coordinated, farmer-led action.
The message is simple: if we want long-term food security and resilient and sustainable agricultural systems, we must invest in farmers — and in the organisations that give them voice and scale.
