Trade Disruptions and Geopolitical Uncertainty: WFO Issues a Call to Action for Global Food Security
Rome, Italy, 22 April 2025 – Amid increasing geopolitical uncertainty and rising trade tensions, the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), building on the positions of its member farmer organisations, is calling on world leaders to take urgent and coordinated action to protect farmers and strengthen global food security.
In its new statement, WFO warns that sustained trade restrictions and ongoing conflicts are disrupting agricultural supply chains, fuelling price volatility, and placing a growing financial and operational burden on farmers worldwide.
With farmers already contending with structural challenges such as climate change, high input costs, and shifting demographics, the statement — reflecting the shared concerns of WFO members— highlights the need for a fair, transparent, and predictable trading environment. It also underlines the importance of restoring and reforming the WTO dispute settlement system and promoting cooperation to reduce risks and build resilience.
The statement reinforces WFO’s commitment to a rules-based global agricultural trading system and echoes the WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s call for restraint and constructive dialogue in the face of rising trade tensions.
At a time when the world is reminded of the enduring value of moral leadership and principled cooperation, WFO underscores the need for trade policies grounded in fairness, solidarity, and the shared responsibility to nourish the planet.
