WFO was selected by the UNDRR to ensure a successful implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

The World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) was selected by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) as the responsible Organisations for the implementation of the stakeholders’ action plan. WFO and UNDRR have signed a grant agreement that confirms their commitment at working together for the successful implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

UNDRR is the United Nations focal point for disaster risk reduction, and it oversees and promotes the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) 2015-2030, that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, to help countries reduce existing risks and preventing the creation of new ones.

WFO participated in the SFDRR launch in 2015 in Sendai, Japan as representative of the farmers’ constituency and has been actively engaged in the process since 2018 when the Sendai Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM) was created and launched in Geneva. WFO sits in the SEM Advisory Group coordinating the farmers’ constituency, bringing the farmers’ voice as one of the most impacted actors by disasters and being agriculture the sector with a huge potential to contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation, increasing resilience of food systems.

Both the organisations share the vision to substantially reduce disaster losses, in lives and the social, economic, and environmental assets of communities and countries.

Under the new agreement, which will be implemented until 31 December, WFO will coordinate the SEM and its members in the implementation of the SEM workplan that was adopted in November 2019, as well as to increase awareness on DRR in the global processes related to climate change and sustainable development among others.

WFO is looking forward to joining hands with UNDRR and the SEM members to increase SEM visibility and mainstream the need for an increased resilience within the global policy actions.
