On September 09th, 2020, the WFO President Theo de Jager, delivered the closing remarks of the Farmers’ Forum organised within the 10th African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF).

During his speech, de Jager highlighted how COVID-19 had revealed the centrality of agriculture in the path towards a sustainable planet for all and the key role of farmers in the way leading to transforming food systems. “The fact that one of us, Dr Agnes Kalibata, has been appointed as Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Food Systems Summit witnesses the weight of farmers in the process leading to it,” de Jager said.

He then called for more inclusive business models for farmers, underlining that agriculture that is not profitable is a welfare case.

Let’s talk with the farmers rather than about the farmers. Our time is pregnant with a change in food systems, let us get into the driving seat,” de Jager stated, calling farmers to action.
