From May 26th to 31st 2019, Katrina Sarah Milne, President of Federated Farmers of New Zealand and WFO Board Member of the Oceania Constituency, represented the World Farmers’ Organisation at the 87th General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in Paris, France.

Every year, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) brings together the national Delegates from its 182 Member Countries as well as representatives from its global network of experts and partners to address the challenges in accelerating more resilient animal health systems.

During this six-day event, the World Assembly of Delegates focuses on considering current and future global animal health challenges. This year’s meeting focused on how external factors such as climate change, conflicts, socioeconomics and trading patterns, will impact Veterinary Services, and how they can adapt.

Other topics that were covered included the work on achieving transparency and surveillance of diseases and the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

“It’s been a very educational few days – many working groups helping solve issues around animal disease spread, watching for emerging disease, antimicrobial resistance and lifting levels of reporting of disease so early actions can be taken”, remarked Katrina Sarah Milne at the end of the event.
